Beaverbrook, (William) Max(well) Aitken 1879 - 1965. 1st Baron Beaverbrook. British financier, Newspaper proprietor, and politician, born in Canada. He bought a majority interest in the Daily Express 1919, founded the Sunday Express 1921, and bought the London Evening Standard 1923. He served in Lloyd George's World War I cabinet and Churchill's World War II cabinet. Between the wars he used his newspapers, in particular the Daily Express, to campaign for empire and free trade and against Prime Minister Baldwin.
